Otto Appel Memorial Coin
Otto Appel (1867-1952), organizer of German plant protection, was director and president of the then Biological Reichsanstalt from 1920 to 1933. During his time in office, the state testing of plant protection products was introduced uniformly for the entire Reich by the Biological Reichsanstalt. Even after his retirement in 1933, he had a decisive influence on the first Plant Protection Act of 1937. He had already prepared a draft for this in 1914. Under the patronage of Ministerial Director Prof. F. W. Maier-Bode, on the occasion of the 85th birthday of Privy Councillor Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Otto Appel, the Otto Appel Memorial Coin was donated.

Under the patronage of Ministerial Director Prof. Dr. F. W. Bode, an Otto Appel memorial coin was donated to mark the 85th birthday of the doyen of German plant protection, Privy Councillor Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Otto Appel.
At its meeting on March 18, 1959, the committee adopted the following new version of the statutes of November 27, 1957:
1. The patronage of the Otto Appel Memorial Coin, donated on May 19, 1952, on the occasion of the 85th birthday of the nestor of German plant protection, Privy Councillor Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Otto Appel, is held by the President of the Julius Kühn Institute, Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants.
2. The Otto Appel Memorial Coin can be awarded annually on the birthday of Privy Councillor Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Appel, on 19 May, for valuable scientific or organizational work in the field of plant protection. The award can be combined with a cash prize. It can be awarded to both German and foreign persons
3.The award is decided by a committee composed of personalities nominated by the following organizations directly involved in plant protection issues:
- Industrieverband Agrar e.V.
- Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau e.V. (VDMA - German Engineering Federation)
- AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG,
- Deutsche Phytomedizinische Gesellschaft e.V. (German Phytomedical Society),
- in addition, the respective head of the Plant Protection Division of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
The committee elects its own chairman and decides by simple majority. If possible, it meets once a year to nominate the persons to be honored. If the vote results in a tie, the patron takes the decision.
Proposals for candidates for the award of the Otto Appel Memorial Coin in the following year can be submitted in writing to the patron of the Foundation by December 31, together with the reasons for the nomination. The Patron forwards the proposals to the Board of Trustees.
4. The committee is obliged to hear a representative of the Julius Kühn Institute, Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants, and one representative each of the plant protection offices and the independent scientific community before selecting the recipient of the award. The committee appoints the representatives and the patron conducts the interview.
5. The respective patron of the committee is responsible for the management of the award.
6. The presentation of the Otto Appel Coin shall take place in a dignified setting at a time to be determined by the committee by the respective patron or his representative.
7. Amendments to the statutes shall be made by simple majority. In the event of the dissolution of the Foundation, the committee shall decide on the use of any available funds.
8. The original of the statutes signed by the members of the committee shall be kept by the Julius Kühn Institute, Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants.
